FAMILY WINERIES

One of the great pleasures of learning about wine is finding good bottles of wine made by smaller, hands-on winemakers. These are usually family wineries, often making barely 1,000 cases a year or slightly more. To put that in context, even a mid-sized California winery produces 50,000 to 75,000 cases a year, while the real giants make over a million cases. It is no trick to find those wines. You see the labels everywhere, and of course, many larger wineries make very good wine.

But I've always had a soft spot for the little guys.

Sable Ridge Vineyards released its first wine in 1996 but is clearly on the fast track and becoming something of a cult favorite among its fans. Sable Ridge wines have twice been named Salute to the Arts Peoples' Choice Winery in the annual Sonoma celebration.
